What is the best guide/software to unlock Wii consoles?
My research showed that there are basically 4 different guides available:
- Wii Unlocker Ultra by myhomebreware
- Wii Unlock Plus
- Homebreware
- Brew Wii

At first sight, all these guides are very similar. They include detailed step-by-step instructions how to unlock Wii consoles within a few minutes. The authors gathered information about unlocking the Wii from all over the internet and created concise and easy to follow guides, allowing you to unlock your Wii without any hassles and without voiding your warranty. You could probably also find most of the information in these guides yourself but this would require hours upon hours of research on several different websites. In my opinion it’s better to spend a few dollars and get a guide that is proven to work instead of trying to find out everything myself. In the end I possibly spend all the time and I’m still unable to unlock my Wii…
Back to the different guides… Upon further investigation, I found significant differences between the 4 guides. The guides all cost more or less the same ($30 – $35) but all have different features.
So, in the next step, I tried to find out if the guides only include the instructions in written form or if they also include videos describing the process. This eliminated the first candidate: Homebreware. No videos, but the same price? Thanks, I’m not interested…
After that I took a look at the bonuses: The remaining 3 unlock Wii guides all include a Wii cheating guide that provides tips and tricks for various Wii games and these guides are all very similar. Thus, no conclusion because of this bonus. However, while Wii Unlocker Ultra and Wii Unlock Plus offer additional bonuses, Brew Wii (which also is the most expensive guide) only offers the cheating guide as a bonus and therefore isn’t in the run for the best available guide.
The remaining two guides, Wii Unlocker Ultra and Wii Unlock Plus both offer the following additional bonuses:
- A tool and guide to backup Wii games
- The software needed to turn your Wii in a DVD/media player
In addition to that, Wii Unlock Plus includes the so-called Homebrew Database, a tool to download and install homebrew (user-developed) games, that is not included in Wii Unlocker Ultra. That means if you unlock Wii consoles with Wii Unlocker Ultra, you have to download and install the games manually.
However, Wii Unlocker Ultra offers a two bonuses that in my opinion are much more valuable than the Homebrew Database:
1. There are some games out there that you can’t backup and you won’t be able to play a copy on your unlocked Wii unless you use the games patching software and guide included in Wii Unlocker Ultra.
2. In my opinion the most valuable bonus of all is the Wii Unlocker Ultra Membership. If you buy Wii Unlocker Ultra, you get access to a membership area with information about new Wii firmware versions, homebrew games, cheats, updates and many more. This will make sure that you will also find a suitable unlock for future Wii versions.

The best guide to unlock Wii consoles is Wii Unlocker and for about $30 you get a great unlock guide and excellent bonuses that could also be easily sold as own products. As already said, the best part about that guide is the access to the membership area that makes sure that you will always be able to unlock your Wii, no matter what kind of updates Nintendo releases for the Wii in the future.

How do you unlock Wii consoles?
There are basically two ways to do it:
1. Unlock Wii consoles with a mod chip
You can replace the original chip of the console with a modded version that is available on various more or less shady websites or on ebay. Replacing the original chip has a few disadvantages:
You have to wait until the mod chip is delivered via mail- You have to replace the original chip yourself and risk the life of your console
- You loose your warranty because you changed the hardware of your Wii
- A mod chip can cost you up to $100
Altogether unlocking your Wii with a mod chip can be expensive and risky.
2. Unlock Wii consoles with software
The second way to unlock your Wii console is by using software tools. These tools have several advantages as opposed to a mod chip:
- You can download the software and start immediately
- The unlocking process takes literally 5 minutes
- You don’t need to change the hardware of your console
- You get a detailed step-by-step guide on how to unlock your console
- You are still able to update your Wii to the latest firmware version
- You don’t loose your warranty because the unlocking is done through software
As you can see, with the use of software, you could unlock your Wii within the hour.
But why does everybody want to unlock Wii consoles?
In the beginning of this post I already wrote about two additional features of an unlocked Wii, but here is a full list:
- You can “backup” your original games and play these backups on your Wii
- You can play so-called homebrew games on your Wii
- You can watch DVDs and even other video formats like .mp4/.avi and many more turning your Wii into a media center
- You can use emulators to play classic games like Double Dragon, Duck Hunt, or Contra
- You aren’t bound to US games anymore and can also play games from countries like China or Japan
- You will be able to listen to radio, mp3 and play youtube videos
And that’s why so many people want to unlock Wii consoles…
